We got engaged Jan 8th, 2005. We already had dinner plans that evening to try out a nice steakhouse in town. I was going to meet Josh at his house, and Josh was going to drive to our 9 pm dinner.

When I got to Josh's house, I noticed he had strings of white lights all across his ceiling, there was a table setup in the middle of the room covered in white linen, and on the table was a candle, a red rose, and a bottle of gin (jenever) we'd bought in Holland. Frank Sinatra was playing in the background. At this point I knew something was up. Josh came out of his bedroom, and apparently asked me to sit down.

I didn't hear him ask me to sit, but I did hear him ask if I wanted some of the gin. Josh started to talk a little bit about the gin, and I didn't know what to do so I just went with the flow. We had a bit of gin, then he came over to me, and held my hands in his.

I don't even remember what Josh said! I just remember thinking "This can't be happening!" He didn't get down on one knee, so I was a bit thrown.

I do remember he stopped talking and I said yes! Then he pulled out the ring, and said "I'll let you put that on" because it's so small (size 3.5!) and he didn't believe it would actually fit. I was tearing up and trembling, and we hugged.

It turns out Josh's plan was to have me sit at the table, get down on one knee, propose, and toast with the gin. When I didn't sit down, he was thrown, reacted by having the gin first and proposal second. He didn't get down on one knee because he was so preoccupied with getting the words out that he simply forgot. And he was a bit nervous, too!
